Was genau?
It’s been a while since I finished this piece, so I guess it’s really about time I posted it. What I am talking about? The variant cover I made for the 4th issue of… *drums*… Michael Feldmann’s Hades Syndrom! The comic is a release by the independent publisher THENEXTART. This isn’t the first time we worked together. In 2009 a few of my little drawings made their way into one of TNA’s comics. And at this year’s Comic Salon in Erlangen I was part of the colorful bunch of TNA artists, as I already mentioned in an earlier post. This was also where the idea for the variant cover was born.
Wohl kaum! Der erwachsene Leser bekommt dagegen spannende Unterhaltung geboten. Rotzige Dialoge, ein toughes (Anti-)Heldenduo, Verfolgungsjagden, Schusswechsel und Explosionen.. Actionherz, was willst du mehr? Mehr soll hier aber nicht verraten werden.
The comic has a post-apocalyptic setting but takes place in Germany, rather than the usual US setting. The whole thing is dark, rough and dirty. Violence, sex and even more violence make up the biggest part of the main characters‘ daily lives. Obviously this isn’t suitable for a younger audience. The mature reader, however, gets a thrilling adventure. Cocky dialogs, a tough (anti-)hero duo, car chases, shootouts and explosions.. what more could action fans possibly be longing for?
So much for my introduction.. and time for some visual material. Let’s begin with this sketch. After several failed attempts I finally came up with this rough sketch. Left hand is the comic’s female main character, Dodo. The sketch is unclean and obviously incomplete, regarding the (missing) background. A lack of background at the sketch/line-art stage is nothing too unusual for me, though. So I mailed them the sketch and waited for the okay.
After a positive feedback it was time to start coloring. Pencil were the weapon of choice, with pencils I started working.. and then, only a bit later, it was Bye-bye-pencils. Something just didn’t feel right. A general discontent, accompanied by the still present lack of ideas for how to design the background led to my decision to cancel the pencil version (which has, btw, been only the second time in all the years that I’ve canceled a colo). So this meant everything back to the starting line. For those who still want a peek at the canceled version, here’s a scan.
Also nochmal alles in Vektoren.
So let’s start over in vectors. That’s easily said and the resulting image has a clean and clearly arranged look, too. But in the end this turned out to be my biggest and most complex vector pic to date. Contrary to my nature I did a lot of experimenting. It took a few attempts before I finally came up with this background layout. It’s simple but fitting (and partly inspired by the official cover of one of the earlier issues), I think. The laser and glowing eyes can certainly be improved, but for a first try I think they aren’t too bad. Same goes for the smoke on the ground. Took me a while to find an okay look. Btw, the dark spot next to Dodo’s belly button is her tattooed ID number. It’s tiny and thus totally unreadable.. but it was fun to add it nonetheless. In Inkscape, on an appropriate zoom level, you can clearly read it :D
Soviel also dazu.
Okay, that’s that. For all those who are curious now and want to know more, here are the relevant links again. And with a big fat THANKYOU GUYS to Micha and Thenextart for offering this collaboration I wanna say goodbye. Until the next (post.. or collabo ;) )
